Sept, 2020 third place winner: daydreamer by Cassandra Clark

The sand was warm and soft beneath Angelica’s feet as she sprinted along the beach. Waves crashed against the shore, tendrils of sea mist rising up from the water, and the sun cresting above the sea.

She stopped and gazed at the ocean with the faintest of smiles. She walked towards it, thick seafoam curled over her toes, she looked up to the cloud speckled sky. Raising her hands over her ears, she leaned forward and dived-

Her head slammed into the airbag of her car. The world spun around her, something dribbled down her aching forehead. Her hand fumbled for her seatbelt, she found it, unclipped it, and wiggled out of the car. Her hands hit the pavement. Her eyes swam with unshed tears, her head was pounding and her body ached.

Angelica felt consciousness leave her.

Angelica awoke hours later, she blinked her eyes rapidly, trying to adjust to the harsh fluorescent lights of room she now lay in. “If this is heaven, it's way too bright,” She groaned out.

“Hehe. Sorry to disappoint, but this isn't heaven.” She glanced to her right and saw a gray-haired man, looking to be in his late 50’s, he had a friendly smile on his face. A name tag clipped on his right breast pocket read: Doctor Delacruz. Angelica pulled herself up in bed. Was she in the hospital?

“What...happened?” she croaked.

“You were in a car crash. Apart from a minor concussion, you're in perfect condition, not many people in car crashes can say the same.”

Angelica’s face flushed just thinking about that beach. This was her own fault, if only she hadn’t been daydreaming… Angelica flopped back into bed and declared, “I need a vacation!”
